Statement by Tanzania Election Watch Panel of Eminent Persons on unfair disqualification of opposition candidates in the forthcoming elections in Tanzania
We continue to encourage all the stakeholders to uphold and promote the principles of democracy and good governance through the institutionalization of transparency, accountability and participatory democracy as enshrined in national laws as well as in various international treaties and standards including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Taarifa ya kundi la watu mashuhuri waangalizi wa uchaguzi kuhusu hatua ya kupigwa marufuku wagombeaji wa upinzani kwenye uchaguzi mkuu ujao wa Tanzania.
Kundi hili linafahamu kuhusu taarifa iliyotolewa na tume ya uchaguzi tarehe 1 Septemba mwaka wa 2020 ikiwataka wagombeaji wote kuzingatia sheria namasharti ya uandaaji uchaguzi. Katika taarifa hiyo , tume hiyo ilidokeza kuangazia upya jumla ya malalamishi 557 kuhusiana na uchaguzi wa ubunge na viti vya baraza la wadi. Tunafahamu pia kuwa wakati wa usikizwaji malalamishi hayo, tume hii inapaswa kufuata kanuni za usimamizi wa haki. Jopo hili linafahamu kuhusu taarifa ya NEC ya tarehe 8, 9 na 11 mwezi septemba katika kutimiza wajibu wake, kwa kuambatana na kipengee 40(6) cha sheria ya uchaguzi sehemu ya 343.

We have come together through this panel of people who care deeply about democracy and constitutionalism from the East and Southern Africa region to hold President Magufuli and his counterparts to their word. We believe a truly democratic Tanzania is critical for anchoring the enjoyment of peace, tranquility and justice in our region. Tanzania’s role in building fair and just democracies across the Great Lakes, East and Southern Africa can not be overemphasized. We have all borne witness to Mwalimu Nyerere’s astute leadership in forging our nations together and in aiding for our heed for truly democratic and self governing states throughout the global south.
